Krauthammer Book Selected

Charles Krauthammer

Charles Krauthammer

For its second monthly meeting, the LRWF Book Club has selected Things That Matter: Three Decades of Passions, Pastimes and Politics by Charles Krauthammer, the late columnist named by the Financial Times as the most influential commentator in the nation. His weekly column was a must-read in Washington and across the country. The Book Club meets at 10 am, April 16, in Lafayette. To attend please contact Kim Elder, kne@pacbell.net.

In this book readers will find not only the country’s leading conservative thinker’s defense of limited government but also his views on, among other things, feminism, evolution, and the death penalty. In the autobiographical introduction, he reflects on the events that shaped his career and political philosophy. Krauthammer suffered a diving accident as a young man that left him paralyzed. However, he became a doctor, physiatrist, and then a writer.

In an interview with Dana Perino, Krauthammer was asked, “If you had a magic wand and could get the U.S. federal government to do three things, what would be your top priorities?” He replied, “ Abolish the income tax code with its staggeringly intrusive and impenetrable provisions and replace it with a clean consumption tax. Get out of the race business and return the country to the colorblind vision of Martin Luther King. Kill the penny.”
