Talk Show Host Larry Elder Joins Race To Recall Newsom
Nationally syndicated talk radio host Larry Elder announced yesterday he is running for California governor in the election to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. Los Angeles-based Elder said he was asked to run “months ago” by radio host Dennis Prager. “I said ‘Hell no,’ but then more and more people I respect asked me to do it,” he explained. Elder said he will formally file his paperwork today.
“I’m running for governor because the decline of California isn’t the fault of its people.” Elder said in a statement. “Our government is what’s ruing the Golden State. Our streets aren’t safe from rising violent crime or the disaster of rising homelessness. And the scandals of Sacramento aren’t going to stop on their own. It’s time to tell the truth. We’ve got a state to save.”
Elder related how his parents raised their three boys on his father’s salary as a janitor and his mom was a stay-at-home mom. That can’t be done today because California is so expensive, he said.
The state’s economy was reopened in June but California continues to suffer from an out-of-control homeless crisis, rising crime rates, and looming water and power shortages. Newsom’s popularity also has suffered from a multibillion-dollar fraud scandal at the state unemployment agency as well as such instances as his now-famous dinner at the French Laundry while the rest of the state was in lockdown.
Candidates have until Thursday to file their paperwork. The state will start mailing out ballots August 16 for the September 14 election. Voters will be asked two questions on the ballot: Should Newsom be removed and then who should replace him from a list of registered candidates. Unfortunately for Newsom his name will be on that list but without the D for Democrat next to it. He missed the deadline to do so but knew his secretary of state would not oppose him in court. However, the California Patriot Coalition did and yesterday the court ruled in its favor.
Elder joins a GOP candidate list that includes former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, failed 2018 gubernatorial candidate John Cox, Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, and Caitlyn Jenner, an Olympic gold medalist who became a transgender reality TV star.
